THE CHARACTER
Character Name: Lambdadelta
Series: Umineko no Naku Koro ni
Canon Point: Episode 5
Character Age: 1,000+ (Mod permission granted for her appearance.)
Background: here & here
Personality:
Lambdadelta is annoying as all get-out. She is the best. She knows she's the best. She enjoys being the best. This is not a good combination, though the best isn't exactly the right term considering Bernkastel-- but being the most powerful thing in existence is quite important to Lambdadelta! She happily gloats about her powers whenever she feels it's necessary. She holds grudges too, and that is not a good trait in an Umineko witch.
Anyway, her ego is like a fine wine. It has taken a thousand years to turn into perfection and then Bernkastel won against her, and took her title of 'most powerful witch'-- definitely not something she warmed up to. ... Or was it? Lambdadelta loves Bernkastel so much that she also hates her. The whole purpose of the game is to trap Bernkastel with her forever. Her obsessive nature is not something to be doubted, though in reality, in front of Bernkastel and in front of most people, she acts immature with an ego the size of Rokkenjima. Her sense of humor and general nature is very petty, and most people who look at her will dismiss her as a brat. This is generally a way to trick people into not taking her very seriously. Combining her youthful teen appearance with her cheeky attitude, one could easily dismiss her.
Until you make her mad, then the party time is over.
At first glance, Lambda doesn't look like she can take it as well as she can dish it. She'll throw tantrums if you tease her, despite her endless teasing of you. This is only her first nature, and if you're lucky, it's the only one you'll see. Lambda always knows the best move. She can look onto a chessboard 'figurative or literal' and always will make the move that is most beneficial to her-- which makes her pissed at Beatrice, who she made a witch, who will deliberately not make the best move in favor of messing with her opponents more. This means Beatrice has a weakness, which means Bernkastel has a chance of escaping Lambdadelta's bird cage, which does not make for a happy Lambdadelta. For screwing with Lambdadelta's chances of a perfect game, she threatens to send Beatrice even lower than she was before Lambda made her a witch-- something that terrifies Beatrice. And that is hard to do.
That doesn't mean Lambda is above screwing with others for amusement-- hell, it's likely something she'd do to alleviate her boredom. She simply won't do it if it gets in her way of a perfect game, unlike Beatrice. That's another point-- Lambda hates being bored, so be sure to be interesting around her! Or she will make you interesting. Her profile in the tips state she "embodies the concept that hard workers will be rewarded, and is very respected, even by human beings". Her power is immeasurable, and though she loves to tease, it's possible for a human being to earn her smile-- if they deserve it.
She might not look it, but while she's in cahoots with Bern quite a bit, she both loves and hates her, an obsession that makes sense only for witches. She desperately wants to be the one that understands Bernkastel. Lambdadelta states she's a survivor-- stating that a lot of what she does is to reassure herself that she's no longer in that hell, going as far to say that 'even hate is a gift when you're trapped in hell', paraphrased. So yeah! Apparently it was so bad that she needs to constantly remind herself that she's out-- something people aren't going to learn about her unless they're very close to her. So Lambdadelta, unlike Bern, is a bit softer at heart. She's willing to risk herself to see 'the perfect good end' constructed by Ange and Battler in the very end of the series, guessing about her possible punishment of hundreds of years seriously, and taking it lightly. However, that doesn't mean Lambdadelta will do that for just anyone.
Lambdadelta has no problem being frank with the people beneath her, telling them just how worthless they are or what they mean to her little game. If their purpose is to suffer, she’ll tell them so! But even when she takes on such a cruel stance, it doesn’t mean she won’t change her mind in favor of a more interesting end. Lambdadelta is fickle, and though she had one ultimate goal in the end (trapping Bernkastel in her eternal game), she’s willing to flex on whether ultimate despair or a victory to end all victories is more interesting. After all, she is immortal, technically speaking. While she delights in being cruel, sometimes cruel isn’t the most fun. This makes Lambdadelta a curious ally or a terrible foe.
At times, she even becomes melancholy for the players on the board, even when she’s taking over it, or at least giving them more sympathy than her counterpart. She offers advice to the possible losers of the battle, saying to hold on to every terrible thing Erika has done to them, because hate gives you something to hold onto. Her shallow act is mostly that, an act, that she uses to keep herself ahead of her own memories. It’s said that because she rewards hard workers, humans believe in her and give her lots of power. Whether this could be said for what happened to her in ‘hell’, no one knows for sure.
Lambdadelta is selfish, and exercises that fault often. She’ll gladly take over someone’s ‘story’ to mess it up and put herself in spotlight, just to have fun. However, she’s also someone who rewards people who fight for what they believe in, and even if it goes against her end goal, she’s prone to change sides and go with whoever she favors. In this, Lambdadelta is a polar chaotic neutral. She can either be heinously villainous or recklessly helpful to a main hero. It all depends on how invested she is and what the competition looks like. Therefore, she’s flighty and not exactly trustworthy depending on the situation.
A fan of grand conflict, Lambdadelta will often watch people perform within their roles and casually interfere if she wants to. For instance, she deflected a blade with a piece of popcorn at one point within a Witch’s battle because it made it more fascinating for her to watch. Being very hands on, she tends to act as a charismatic character in other people’s lives, whether they want her to be or not. She’ll often come between them and their goals or enemies to offer support or struggle depending on her mood. A witch dies if they’re bored, it’s their kryptonite; so Lambdadelta would willingly go through with a setting like this for the cheap thrills. It doesn’t mean she likes being depowered, but she does like being put into a foundation where she doesn’t know all the tricks up her sleeve.
A cruel part of her is that she’ll gladly throw someone into the pit or the void just to make herself feel better. Witches, as a rule of thumb, must go through a thousand years of suffering to become a true witch. While it’s implied that Lambda is older than a thousand, most Umineko witches bear the claim of going through a thousand years of ‘true hell’. To Lambdadelta, being able to conquer someone means that she’s up on the top and not falling down back into her despair. Parts of her even believe that she’s still down there somehow, and everything since has just been a merry hallucination— hence her cruelty to reassure herself she’s alive.
On one last note, Lambda likes to grant the wishes of humans that please her, who are especially noted to be hard workers. She might do this in game, with the limitations below.
Powers/Abilities:
Being an Umineko witch, Lambda can basically do whatever she wants. Summon what she wants, create what she wants out of thin air. She has the ability to change her voice to make absolutely perfect impressions of other people, saying that 'anyone can fake a voice, like trying to get out of school sick, or trying to get something you want'. She's got no rules with what she can conjure, but when it comes to serious things, there are rules. Being the Witch of Certainty, she can kill any person 'certainly'-- something a witch usually can't do because all important magic is fundamentally based on risk in the Umineko world! This seems like a cheap power though, and not really a fun one-- her real power is a massive godmod power. She has the ability to make anything happen with 100% certainty-- though not always right away, it's still a gamebreaker should she choose to use it.
Lambdadelta is also a voyager/traveler witch, which means she can travel from kakera (worlds) to kakera, doing whatever she pleases. So she's a canon universe-traveler. A voyager witch is a witch strong enough to retain their sense of self in the sea of kakera (kind of a feat) and go to and fro. Lambdadelta can also freeze time and talk to someone specifically while time is frozen-- though it really isn't talking to someone while time is frozen as much as it is taking them to another plane of reality and speaking with them-- but it's still pretty much the same thing from an outsider's point of view.
Another thing, and the most prevalent thing to come up as part of her powers, is the use of the red truth and the blue truth. The red truth is something stated, complete with obnoxious noise and red text floating in the air, that is the truth, simply put. It can be a truth that omits other truths, or a truth that is misleading, but it is still an objective, pure truth. Blue truth is theorizing, subjective truth, that counters the red and can only be countered by the red. It can be easily torn apart by the red when wrong. They're kind of like dueling blades of logic formulated just for a mystery. Witches are capable of granting use of the blue truth to humans. There's another truth, but it's not Lambda's place to use it so I won't go into it.
Power Nerfs (if applicable):
Because Lambda is a supremely broken character, I propose the following nerfs without making her feel too limited within the game structure.
- Make anything happen with absolute certainty. Obviously, this has to go. Her ability to kill people with certainty is nerfed as well. She can now only kill people if she makes an effort.
- Conjuring limited to items the size of a horse or less. She cannot get anything from anyone’s specific world, she can only create new objects she knows of and she can’t replicate technology from other people’s worlds or this one. She cannot grant magical items to anyone. She cannot conjure magical animals. At most, she can make empty-headed goat butlers.
- She gets to keep her impersonation skills.
- She cannot leave as a Voyager. Any and all escape attempts must be manual. (and fail)
- She still fights with superpowered candy, and in terms of power level, be pretty high up but not able to dismantle the game.
- She is capable of granting blue truth upon someone, but not the red. This is in case she wants to play truth volleyball with someone, and have them propose theories at her for her to deflect. Here, this is more of a novelty power and depends on Lambdadelta’s knowledge in-game.
- Whether or not the mods would like her to still freeze time to talk to people is up to them!
- Standard witchy things like levitation and casual gravity control/floating still apply.
Inventory: Lambdadelta arrives with just her magic and the clothes on her back!
Incentives:
- The end of her boredom
- A bit of power (a large place where she can live alone, property, et cetera.)
- The promise that a witch might one day join them here.
